Rock, Paper, Scissors (Tournament)

by .
5 - 10 Low

This is a fun and loud energiser based on the well-known “Rock, Paper, Scissor” game - with a twist: the losing players become the fan of the winners as the winner advances to the next round. This goes on until a final showdown with two large cheering crowds!

It can be played with adults of all levels as well as kids and it always works!

Instructions

1. Find a partner

2. Play "Rock, Paper, Scissors" against each other until the first win.

3. The winner has to find a new opponent. The losing player becomes a fan of the winner.

4. The winner plays against the new opponent, while their fan cheers for them.

5. The winner of the second game searches for a new opponent, while the losing team joins their fan base.

6. Repeat until there are only two opponents with a huge fan base cheering for them. The last two have to play until one player has won 2 times.

Background

The basic rules of "Rock, Paper, Scissors" are the following:

The players count to 3. On 3 they form one out of 3 symbols with their hands:

1) "Rock" – the fist

2) "Paper" – the straight hand

3) "Scissors" – index and middle-finger pointing out

Each symbol wins and loses against one other symbol:

"Rock" brakes the "Scissors".

"Scissors" cuts the "Paper".

"Paper" wraps the "Rock"

  • I usually run this with having the pairs playing 3 times before deciding the winner - that gives a bit more excitement and suspense in each round, as the pairs get the chance to adjust their strategy (or guess, rather:) But it also works with only one attempt, especially if there is a time pressure.

  • How many times should the pair play before deciding for a winner? Only once or say three times with each new opponent ? What would you recommend ?

  • This can be played online too! In Zoom have people go to the Video settings menu and select "hide non-video participants". Then as people are eliminated they turn off their video so only the players remain. In the Zoom version people pick randomly who they are playing against (honor system) and people cheer in the chat. You can't really follow who your person loses to like you can in person, but it goes so fast its easy enough for people to randomly choose new people to champion. You can debrief this game and people will often talk about the joy of supporting someone being the most fun part of the game (even though the support was completely random who they are supporting). https://www.sessionlab.com/methods/rock-paper-scissors-championship-9jq6lc

  • @Kevin Doyle, Step 3: The losing player becomes a fan of the winner. The first round there is no loser, so there are no fans. All players can play at the same time.

  • Instructions are poorly written! Step 1. Find a partner: If you are in a group, does everyone find a partner? If everyone is playing at the same time, there will be no one to become your cheering section.... So do you start with just two people?

  • I love this one!! It's a great way to end the day on a high note (and award a silly trophy to whoever wins).
